{"id":250,"date":"2026-05-24T14:59:39","date_gmt":"2026-05-24T12:59:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/badassnetwork.com\/quietrevolution\/?p=250"},"modified":"2026-05-24T15:00:59","modified_gmt":"2026-05-24T13:00:59","slug":"multiple-income-streams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/badassnetwork.com\/quietrevolution\/multiple-income-streams\/","title":{"rendered":"What Actually Counts as an Income Stream (And What Doesn\u2019t)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I think we need to start being a bit more honest about what actually counts as an income stream now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because somewhere along the line, we started calling everything \u201cmultiple income streams.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Substack with 14 subscribers.<br>A Gumroad product that made $11 in March.<br>An affiliate dashboard quietly collecting dust.<br>Three half-finished courses.<br>A LinkedIn strategy.<br>A \u201cpersonal brand.\u201d<br>A Notion template.<br>A membership.<br>A digital ecosystem.<br>A nervous breakdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At some point, it stopped feeling like freedom and started feeling like everyone was trying to turn themselves into a content production facility with a nervous system attached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And maybe it\u2019s just me, but I think people are exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not tired.<br>Exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exhausted by optimisation.<br>Exhausted by constant visibility.<br>Exhausted by every human activity turning into:<br>\u201cyou could sell this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even hobbies aren\u2019t safe anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every time I open LinkedIn now, someone is explaining how they turned breathing exercises, journalling or making candles into a seven-step monetisation ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And honestly? I don\u2019t even think most people fully believe half of this anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think they\u2019re scared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scared of money.<br>Scared of instability.<br>Scared of relying on one income.<br>Scared of falling behind while the internet screams:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BUILD.<br>GROW.<br>MONETISE.<br>SCALE.<br>POST MORE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most consistent advice online right now seems to be:<br>keep performing and eventually you\u2019ll feel safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But a lot of it doesn\u2019t feel safe at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It feels fragile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because if your entire sense of security depends on:<br>algorithms,<br>attention,<br>subscriptions,<br>clients,<br>constant output,<br>or strangers continuing to click on your face forever\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>have you actually escaped anything?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or did you just build a more aesthetic version of instability?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I live in beautiful Switzerland and I recently did a hike that, in all honesty, had absolutely no business being a hike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mountain was basically vertical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But some clever fuck had carved this tiny zig-zag goat path into the side of it, attached chains everywhere so you felt vaguely secure, and then \u2014 for reasons still unknown to me \u2014 built a little restaurant at the top serving R\u00f6sti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Human beings are unbelievable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I haven\u2019t stopped thinking about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because it feels a bit like what we\u2019re doing with modern life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking things that maybe were never meant to hold this much pressure\u2026<br>and engineering increasingly elaborate systems just to keep ourselves climbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also visited an area called Ober\u00e4ggeri, one of the wealthiest areas near Zug, and I noticed the houses, the incredible amount of building going on &#8211; and it genuinely started annoying me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not because they were expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because they were enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Massive boxy houses for two people. And maybe a pedigree dog or cat. <br>Perfect views.<br>Perfect kitchens.<br>Perfect loneliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every house trying to out-view the last one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And meanwhile online, everyone is building the digital version of the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More platforms.<br>More monetisation.<br>More optimisation.<br>More audience growth.<br>More \u201cfreedom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Multiple Income Streams Are Not Always Creating Security<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Somewhere along the line, I realised a lot of us are technically building income streams while becoming emotionally more fragmented in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People are spending half their lives trying to create security while quietly frying their nervous systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Managing forty tabs.<br>Tracking analytics.<br>Reading endless advice.<br>Trying to become \u201cdiscoverable.\u201d<br>Trying to look consistent and calm online while internally feeling like a browser window about to crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And maybe this is where the question changes slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe multiple income streams only really count if it reduces fragility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it creates breathing room.<br>If it compounds quietly.<br>If it still works when you stop performing for five minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are trying to build quieter forms of stability without turning yourself into a full-time content machine, this is still the guide I\u2019d start with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1vZ-WZPjgW5_BpwDk-79JjVRI5WPONJEX\/view?usp=drive_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Quiet Width Starter<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An income stream that disappears the second you stop posting isn\u2019t very wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turning every hobby into content might technically produce money while psychologically shrinking your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Constant visibility is not necessarily freedom either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That changes things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because suddenly, quieter forms of security start counting too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A small affiliate stream that ticks over in the background counts.<br>A blog that slowly compounds trust counts.<br>A practical skill outside your employer counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And weirdly\u2026<br>so does knowing people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which feels slightly awkward to admit after years of hyper-independence being sold as the dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I\u2019m starting to think a lot of modern life has accidentally made people more isolated while convincing them they\u2019re successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone in their own house.<br>Their own lane.<br>Their own subscriptions.<br>Their own carefully curated survival strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then something goes wrong and nobody knows who has useful skills, who needs help or who\u2019s quietly struggling three doors down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And maybe this is part of the exhaustion too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone is trying to grab each other\u2019s attention all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every post needs a hook.<br>Every sentence needs tension.<br>Every story needs a lesson.<br>Every human experience gets turned into content before it\u2019s even fully lived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even reading online feels tiring now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You click on something because you genuinely want to think for a minute\u2026<br>and halfway through someone is funnelling you toward a course, a mastermind, a paid community or a \u201climited time opportunity\u201d to finally become the optimised human you were apparently born to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At some point I realised I wasn\u2019t even reading properly anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just scanning.<br>Skimming.<br>Bracing for the pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which honestly feels like a pretty grim way for human beings to communicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And maybe that\u2019s why this whole \u201cmultiple income streams\u201d conversation has started feeling strange to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because some of what we\u2019re calling freedom just looks like a more socially acceptable form of panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research.<br>Tweaking.<br>Tracking.<br>Refreshing.<br>Consuming endless advice from people who also seem exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Activity is not always movement. And strangely, we often screech to a halt the moment we need to focus on our lane and put our best foot forward. We do need activity. But the right activity.
