Narrow looks like watching a 22-year-old with a 14-slide rebrand of what you\u2019ve been doing for ten years get labelled \u201chigh potential.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Narrow looks like knowing you\u2019ll be the one who quietly fixes the bits they didn\u2019t see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because here\u2019s the part we don\u2019t say out loud:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The system adapted. We kept carrying it the old way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Workplaces modernised. Titles shifted. Flexibility entered the conversation. Negotiation became normal. Boundaries became fashionable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But many of us never renegotiated our place inside that shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We kept saying yes.
We kept absorbing the overflow.
We kept equating reliability with invisibility and responsibility with proof of worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not because we didn\u2019t notice the change \u2014 but because we were trained differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Loyalty meant safety.
Competence meant quiet.
Extra effort meant security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over time, that gap \u2014 between a system that evolved and a role we never recalibrated \u2014 starts to generate something heavier than frustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It becomes resentment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not explosive resentment. Not dramatic. The slow kind. The cumulative kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The kind that surfaces when someone newer negotiates a cleaner deal \u2014 and you\u2019re still the one staying late to make sure the wheels don\u2019t come off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not because they\u2019re wrong to negotiate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But because you never paused to renegotiate for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At 28, one salary felt like a pillar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At 28 you might have been newly married and still arguing about whose turn it was to empty the dishwasher. Or still out on Friday nights trying to locate someone emotionally stable under nightclub lighting. Or renting something small and calling it \u201cfull of character.\u201d Or working ridiculous hours because there was time. So much time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Energy was renewable. Risk was theoretical. One income stream was fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At 48, the picture is different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some of us have teenagers who treat the fridge like a competitive sport. Others are navigating eight-year-olds already practising for adolescence. Some dedicated their entire adult lives to work and now find themselves wondering how a glossy slide pack suddenly outranks two decades of competence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some are supporting ageing parents.
Some are carrying the entire financial load alone.
Some are quietly aware that stamina is no longer infinite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Life has expanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The role has not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The model we stepped into was drawn for linear progression, constant stamina and uninterrupted loyalty. It assumed the body and the bandwidth of someone much younger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, our mortgage, groceries and future still depend on one employer. One salary. One set of hours. One geography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We called that security. On paper, a stable 9-5 job looks responsible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Structurally, it\u2019s concentration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And concentration feels fine \u2014 until it doesn\u2019t. That\u2019s the hidden tension inside a stable 9-5 job most of us were taught to trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 28, we didn\u2019t need very much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rent was manageable. Groceries were basic. Holidays were optional and usually involved a backpack or a relative with a spare room. The future felt far away enough to ignore proper calculations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One salary covered it. Or at least it felt like it did. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At 48, the spreadsheet looks different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mortgages instead of rent.
Insurance policies we actually read.
Teenagers who consume protein like it\u2019s a competitive sport.
Parents who need more support than advice.
Or simply the realisation that retirement is no longer an abstract concept but an approaching line item.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even those without children often find the numbers have scaled. Lifestyle expanded. Standards shifted. Cost of living quietly climbed while loyalty bonuses did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The financial pressure didn\u2019t explode overnight. It accumulated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And yet, for many of us, the income structure remains singular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One salary.
One employer.
One negotiation every year, if we\u2019re lucky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, the younger workforce often enters with a clearer sense of what they will \u2014 and won\u2019t \u2014 carry. They assume flexibility. They price their time differently. They ask for adjustments earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Labour market data continues to show rising job mobility and shifting expectations across industries, as outlined in the OECD Employment Outlook<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWe didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We absorbed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We adjusted privately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We made it work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And now we\u2019re sitting inside a structure that costs more to maintain than it did when we first stepped into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not because we were reckless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because life moved forward \u2014 and our income model didn\u2019t diversify with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When both the structure of work and the cost of life have shifted, staying inside the original design starts to feel less like stability and more like compression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We don\u2019t necessarily need to burn anything down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But we may need to redraw the blueprint. I wrote earlier about designing a more sustainable pace<\/a>, and that question connects directly to structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\nNot emotionally.
Not dramatically.
Structurally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because once you see that the pressure isn\u2019t personal failure \u2014 it\u2019s architectural mismatch \u2014 the conversation changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s no longer about working harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s about widening the frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
