At least, not in the beginning.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Were they deliberately misleading you? Perhaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Were they being overly optimistic? Passive Income<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Passive income generally refers to money earned with relatively little ongoing effort or direct daily involvement. That doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean no work was required to create it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Affiliate Marketing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Affiliate marketing is a business model in which you promote another company&#8217;s products or services using a unique tracking link. When someone makes a qualifying purchase through that link, you earn a commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Digital Marketing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Digital marketing involves using the internet and digital channels, including websites, search engines, email, and social media, to promote products, services, or brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. Mega Millions offers similarly astronomical odds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not exactly a retirement strategy I&#8217;d recommend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might have better luck standing outside during a thunderstorm holding a nine-iron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then there&#8217;s inheritance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re fortunate enough to inherit substantial assets, a qualified financial professional can help structure investments and distributions that provide income monthly, quarterly, or annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also traditional investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bonds:<\/strong> Government and corporate bonds can provide scheduled interest payments. Mortgage-backed securities are another possibility, although they carry additional risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Stock Dividends:<\/strong> When you purchase shares in a dividend-paying company or exchange-traded fund (ETF), you may receive regular distributions without having to sell your investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sounds pretty good, doesn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You buy shares, and money shows up in your account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who could ask for anything better?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, not so fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"the-clorox-example-passive-income-still-carries-risk\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Clorox Example: Passive Income Still Carries Risk<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider Clorox (CLX), a well-established company known for its household products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clorox is a Dividend Aristocrat, meaning it belongs to the S&amp;P 500 and has increased its regular dividend for at least 25 consecutive years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early November 2026, its annualized dividend yield was approximately 5.5%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s an attractive income stream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But here&#8217;s the catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stock can pay a generous dividend while its share price performs poorly. An investor might collect several years of dividends and still experience disappointing overall returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when we compare a stock&#8217;s performance against the S&amp;P 500, we need to account for both price changes and reinvested dividends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The lesson? A dividend is income. It is not protection against investment losses.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every investment involves some combination of risk and potential reward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"what-about-options\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What About Options?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Options can also generate income, particularly through strategies such as covered calls and cash-secured puts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An option is a financial contract giving its buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell an underlying asset at a predetermined price under specified conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The seller receives a premium in exchange for taking on contractual obligations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And those premiums can look mighty enticing on your computer screen!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until you&#8217;re assigned and suddenly find yourself obligated to buy 100 shares of stock, or sell 100 shares you already own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That can snap you out of your daydream in a hurry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Options premiums aren&#8217;t free money, and options trading isn&#8217;t necessarily passive. It requires capital, risk management, and an understanding of the obligations involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"one-overlooked-source-of-passive-income-royalties\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">One Overlooked Source of Passive Income: Royalties<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"632\" src=\"https:\/\/d1roxjdvg6aguv.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/11\/watermarked_img_2059137311586061353.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d1roxjdvg6aguv.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/11\/watermarked_img_2059137311586061353.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d1roxjdvg6aguv.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/11\/watermarked_img_2059137311586061353-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d1roxjdvg6aguv.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/11\/watermarked_img_2059137311586061353-768x474.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s something I find fascinating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever people discuss passive income, publishing and licensing often get overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet these can be substantial sources of long-term income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider the publishing business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose I write a bestselling how-to book that retails for $15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under a hypothetical publishing agreement paying a 10% royalty on the retail price, I&#8217;d receive $1.50 per copy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now suppose that book sells 20 million copies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s $300 million in retail sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My royalties?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>$30 million, before taxes and other contractual considerations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not bad for a little writing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, royalty agreements vary considerably, and selling 20 million books is an extraordinary achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you get the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And what happens when a successful book develops a following?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly there&#8217;s <em>How-To: The 2027 Edition.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then <em>How-To for Women.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then <em>How-To for Teenagers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you know it, the original book has become an entire publishing business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;ve all seen it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"ive-experienced-royalty-income-personally\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">I&#8217;ve Experienced Royalty Income Personally<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years ago, I worked for a well-known and highly respected music arranger and producer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This gentleman had worked on many of the songs I listened to growing up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What amazed me was that he continued receiving royalties from music he&#8217;d helped create 40 or 50 years earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work performed decades ago was still producing income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I can relate to that on a smaller scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m primarily a television and film actor. My busiest professional years were between 1985 and 1992.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although I remain active today, the demand for my acting services isn&#8217;t what it once was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nevertheless, I still receive residual payments from productions I worked on many years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t have to return to the set or perform those scenes again to receive those payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That&#8217;s an excellent example of work performed once continuing to generate income years later.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it&#8217;s an important distinction when discussing affiliate marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"an-online-business-is-still-a-business\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">An Online Business Is Still a Business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"572\" src=\"https:\/\/d1roxjdvg6aguv.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/11\/store-is-a-store.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d1roxjdvg6aguv.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/11\/store-is-a-store.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d1roxjdvg6aguv.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/11\/store-is-a-store-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d1roxjdvg6aguv.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/11\/store-is-a-store-768x429.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s something the internet marketing crowd doesn&#8217;t always emphasize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An online business has more in common with an old-fashioned mom-and-pop store than you might think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Years ago, the mom-and-pop store owner worked twelve hours a day behind a counter. Today, the digital entrepreneur works twelve hours a day behind a computer. At least the store owner got to talk to people!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both businesses require time, money, commitment, and the willingness to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both need customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both must establish trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both can experience months when expenses exceed revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And both require consistency and tenacity if they&#8217;re going to survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest difference is that a traditional storefront usually requires substantially more upfront capital than a modest online business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rent, inventory, insurance, utilities, employees \u2014 those expenses add up quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An online business may have lower startup costs, but lower costs don&#8217;t automatically mean easier profits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know. I&#8217;m sounding pessimistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there&#8217;s an old saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The nice thing about pessimism is that you&#8217;re constantly being proven right or pleasantly surprised.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"can-affiliate-marketing-eventually-produce-passive-income\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can Affiliate Marketing Eventually Produce Passive Income?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Absolutely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there&#8217;s a rather important word missing from many online advertisements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Eventually.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After you&#8217;ve created content, attracted an audience, established credibility, and built systems that work, some of your earlier efforts may continue producing income with less direct involvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are three ways that can happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"1-recurring-commissions-and-subscription-sales\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.
